Potato Nematode

Golden potato nematodeNematodes are pests that attack potatoes, damaging its root system. These worms are 0,5-1,4 mm in size, the base of which is the contents of the root cells.

Soil nematodes cause the greatest harm to this culture. They live in the soil, therefore, it is rather problematic to treat their habitats with the help of chemical preparations.

Stem nematode of potatoes

This is a very small white worm about 1 in length. The formation under the skin of whitish loose spots is the first sign that the tubers are affected by the stem nematode. Detected spots are the breeding grounds of nematodes. A little later the peel in these places dries up, shrivels, easily lags behind the pulp. Dark spots, having a metallic luster, are formed on tubers. Gradually, they increase, the peel beneath them exfoliates. If the damage is strong enough, then it is cracked. Near the umbilical cord is the largest number of spots.

Measures to control the potato nematode

Cultivation of healthy planting material is the main method in combating stem potato nematodes.

To do this, perform the following operations:

The most careful way to sort potatoes during cleaning and just before planting. When picking tubers, it is necessary to discard the infected ones.

Healthy tubers of summer planting are the ideal planting material.

Summer planting should be practiced on seed plots. This contributes to the quality of seed tubers. In addition, there is a sharp decrease in their infection with the stem nematode.

If spring planting of seed potatoes is carried out, it should be cleaned as early as possible. When potatoes are planted early, the damage will be small. At the end of summer or beginning of September, the harmfulness of the nematode rises noticeably.

In most cases, the nematode damages the potato at the edges of the tuber surface. This is what makes it possible to distinguish it from defeat by late blight. In the middle, the tuber remains healthy. Destruction extends deep only in the case when besides nematodes, other harmful microorganisms participate in the destruction of the tuber.

Damaged tubers are the main source of the spread of the disease. But not only tubers. The source may be soil, when growing potatoes after harvest, which was infected by a nematode.

When storing infected potatoes in conditions of high humidity, the infection can transfer to healthy tubers.

Golden Potato Nematode

This pest can be found not only on potato tubers, but also on its roots. In addition, it damages tomatoes and black nightshade, hitting their roots. The female has a globular body. At the front end is a short neck. The male has a vermiform body.

The color of the females is white first. But then they turn yellow or brown. The females die after laying eggs and turn into cysts, remaining in the ground. Eggs and larvae in the cysts can survive for 10 years, even if the potato is absent. For this reason, great difficulties arise in the fight against the golden nematode of potatoes.

Potato bushes, affected by the golden nematode, develop weakly, form a small number of stems. In addition, the affected root shrubs have small tubers. Signs are absent for a weak settlement. Detect damage only after digging and visual inspection of the tubers. When examined on them, you can find small cysts that have a size with a poppy seed. Their color from white and lemon yellow to brown varies during maturation.

Solitary or foci can detect bushes damaged by this pest. If seedless cultivation of potatoes is practiced in one place, then in this case the outbreaks may increase and merge.

Soil, infected tubers, root crops - are the main sources of nematode spread.
