Cleaning and storage of beets

Beet cleaningThe third week of September is the optimal time for mass beet harvesting. Gathering the harvest at this time, you will get ripened roots, which will be perfectly preserved throughout the winter. The peculiarity of beet is that the root crops of this culture accumulate most of their mass for the second half of August and the beginning of September. By the way, the harvest will be less if the plants break off the leaves.

How and when to remove beets

Beet harvesting is carried out in dry weather, the air temperature should be positive. Root crops will become unsuitable for long-term storage even with a slight freezing. Most often, those that are not completely buried in the soil are frozen.

When harvesting beets on private plots, roots are pulled from the ground by hand. After their extraction, the root crops are shaken off the ground. Then they cut off the tops and leave petioles up to 1 cm. Wood ash is used to dust the sections of the foliage. In this case, the probability of infection is excluded.

Undressed for a long time the leaves can not be left. To keep root crops on a bed long time also does not follow. Otherwise they will not be suitable for winter storage. Cool and lay root crops immediately after the slices are chafed.

Beet storage

Dry root crops should be before cleaning in the vault. To do this for a day they should be left under a canopy. Then they should be sorted out. Remove from the total mass of root crops followed by damaged and diseased rhizomes. In boxes or baskets it is possible to add the prepared beets. If you pour root crops with sawdust, peat or sand, the beet will be stored better. Each root can be wrapped in plastic wrap and covered with sawdust or sand. The easiest way to store beets is as follows: the prepared root crops are piled on the floor. 1,5 m - this should be the height of the layer, but not more. From time to time, the roots should move. Of the total mass should be rotted root crops.

The best storage option: the roots are placed on a pre-prepared wooden trellised floor. In this case, they will sprout less, and their fogging will not occur. Powdering of root crops with chalk or ash - this procedure is carried out by many gardeners before laying beets for storage.

In the initial period of storage, beets are sensitive to increased temperature. The plant can germinate already at 4-5? S. This can have an extremely negative impact on the shelf life of root vegetables. Beets are sensitive to humidity. Optimal conditions for its storage in winter: air temperature 2-4? C and relative humidity in the region of 90%.
