Growing turnips

Growing turnipsTurnip is the fastest-growing plant after radish and high temperatures during growth are not required.

For the cultivation of turnip, the best predecessors are legumes, tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchini. The introduction of fresh manure under it does not produce. Otherwise, root crops will grow hollow and ugly. As a top dressing it is possible to add humus and add ashes.

Since turnip has very small seeds, it is best to sow them with ballast, for example, with sand. 20 cm - this distance must be maintained between rows. As for the depth of the seal, it should be 1,5-2 cm. A few days after sowing, you can sprinkle rows of wood ash.

Turnip is a cold-resistant vegetable plant. At a temperature of plus 1-3 °, its seeds begin to germinate. Adult plants can withstand freezing minus 4-8 °. Seed sowing is produced immediately after the rest of the soil (end of April). You can also plant it in late June, for a late harvest.

Growth of turnip is better to produce in open areas, as it reacts badly to shading, so with thinned beds you do not need to be late. After the formation of 2-3 of real leaves, thinning is performed for the first time. Between the plants should leave the distance 4-5 see. Through 10-20 days, the turnips break through for the second time. Between plants, the distance 8-10 should be maintained. This care operation is performed on wet soil. Doing this best in the evening so that the plants are able to grow stronger.

Top dressing is done before the second thinning. Under the plants are introduced slurry and 0,1% solution of boric acid.

If there are no rains, then turnip irrigation is made. Per sq m should be accounted for 2-3 water. The soil is well watered, after which it is sprinkled with earth. This is done to slow the evaporation of moisture from the soil. It is not necessary to perform hilling during the cultivation of turnip.

Her cleaning is done selectively as needed. In the sun, root crops can not be left, otherwise they podvyut, which is not the best way to affect their storage.

For the production of seeds, root crops of summer sowing are selected. The tops of the queen cells are cut higher, the stem root should be left without cleansing it from the ground. The queen cells should be stored in dry sand.
