How to tie a cucumber

Garter cucumberIf you expect to receive high yields of cucumbers, then you should take good care of this culture. When cultivating cucumbers, you must always wear a garter. How to tie a cucumber correctly?

There are gardeners who usually neglect the garter, allowing the lashes of plants to be located directly on the ground. Despite the fact that with this option, care for the cucumber is greatly simplified, the number of fruits collected is much less.

First, despite all the efforts of the gardener, the plant will look for ways to hover around some vertical support, which in the end will result in damage to the whip caused by the severity of the fruit. Secondly, by allowing the cucumber lashes to spread along the ground, during the harvesting, you can skip individual fruits, some of which will be unsuitable for use because of a long stay near the soil. In this regard, most gardeners are interested in how to properly perform a cucumber garter?

First of all, you need to find out how the usual garter is performed. When cultivating cucumbers in the open ground it is time to hold the garter when the plant grows to a mark of the order of 30 cm, while 4-5 leaflets will already be formed on the shoot. Earlier this time to spend a garter is simply not necessary. Having tightened with a garter, you will not admit any irreparable consequences: in this case you just need to be careful not to cause injury to the plant.

In most cases, the garter is made using tapestry. There are two methods of tying cucumbers: horizontal and vertical (the choice is determined by the type of trellis used). The horizontal method is to locate a pair of supports that reach a height of 2 meters (preferably metallic ones) at opposite ends of the bed, between which several horizontal rows of thick and strong rope should be pulled. Be sure to make sure that the rope is stretched well enough. The main drawback of this method is that it will be difficult for plants to grow up, since they reach the nearest horizontal row, they just curl over it.

If we talk about the vertical method, it should be noted that here we use the support in the form of the letter "P", reaching a height of about 2 meters. The horizontal support bar (instead of it can be used and a thick wire) acts as a place where the ends of the ropes are fixed, to which each stem is tied separately. Similarly, for each plant an individual support is created, which not only provides a place for plant growth, but also makes it easier for you to care for it.

For garters of cucumbers, it is desirable to use strips of a sufficiently wide width (2-4 cm), which will avoid traumatizing the stem of the plant if a strong wind rises. Place for the garter loop is selected under the first or second sheet, the end of the rope should be fixed on the horizontal support bar. Avoid excessive tension of the rope, as well as making an overly strong knot: over time it may happen that you will have to pull up or loosen the rope.

There are truck farmers who fix a rope not for the plant itself, but a peg located near the ground. It should be noted that this approach is not meaningless: in some cases, the plant that is tied directly to the rope stretches upward with such force that it leads to pulling it out of the ground.

How to tie a cucumber in a greenhouse

We have already mentioned that in most cases, using these methods, a garter of cucumbers is made, which are cultivated in the open ground. What are the features of the cucumber garter in the greenhouse? In most cases, a special grid is used here. Two canvases of such a grid should be stretched so that they are located under some slope with respect to each other and in the end we get something like a tent. Cucumber tendrils are placed on the grid manually, over time the plant itself will hold on to it and thus grow up.

This method has become widespread due to the fact that this positively affects the yield of cucumbers, and also minimizes the risk of diseases of plants. In general, the grid can be stretched both in the greenhouse and on the site without additional shelters. Among gardeners, there are also those who replace the grid with vertical trellises, tying plants to them. In principle, everything depends on what is more convenient for a truck farmer.
